Obituary:
GRAY - Merrill D. Hersey, 70, died August 12,2023 following a long illness. He passed peacefully from this life surrounded by his loving family.
He was born in Caribou, Maine to Donald and Kathryn Hersey. He attended Caribou Schools and was a member of the United Baptist Church where he learned of God’s love and where he developed the seeds of faith that sustained him throughout his life.
Merrill often described himself as “a kid at heart”. He loved family gatherings and celebrations and could usually be counted on to provide some fun. He never lost his delight in childhood past times and as an adult enjoyed researching and acquiring Antique Toys and Board games.
He loved nature and wildlife and found peace and great enjoyment in the outdoors. He loved fishing and was exhilarated by the woods in Autumn. As his father had done for him, he passed this love and knowledge on to his niece and nephew and later to his own son and grandson.
In recent years his great joy was attending his Grandson’s sports events, especially Little League Baseball games.
Merrill was a generous and loyal friend. Besides many dear friends and neighbors, he is survived by his son, Kyle Hersey and daughter-in-law, Megan of Topsham, Maine, a beloved Grandson, Jaelen Hersey; a sister, Elaine Gross and brother-in-law, Earl; a niece, Emily Gross; a nephew, Ehren Gross and wife, Kathleen; three Grandnieces, Esther, Naomi and Lydia Gross; and a special friend Dianne Martin. Merrill was predeceased by both of his parents.
A private family committal service is planned at Evergreen Cemetery in Caribou, Maine.
Perhaps they are not stars but rather openings in heaven where the love of our lost ones shines down to let us know they are happy.”
