Obituary:
Maryllyn Jeannette Fairfield - 105 years- died peacefully at her daughter’s home in Mansfield Center, CT on October 15, 2023 with her family and close friend by her side. She was born on July 27, 1918 in Saco, Maine, the daughter of Jeannette Scamman and Jesse Earle Rumery. She is survived by her daughter, Donna and her partner Jane Fried, many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 78 years, Roy P Fairfield and by her brothers Earle R. Rumery and Reed W. Rumery.

Maryllyn was a proud graduate of Thornton Academy in Saco, ME, Class of 1936. She was a pioneer of her time graduating from the Trull Nursing School , Biddeford, ME, Class of 1938. She worked as a private nurse in Saco and later at Ohio University Elementary School in Athens, Ohio. With her nursing skills she became the person our family often turned to for help and support during most of her life. Maryllyn had a passion for cultural history and discovery. She and Her husband traveled extensively living in Greece in the early 50’’s and visiting many friends around the United States, Canada, Europe and East and West Africa.

In the 1950’s she became enchanted with embroidery of all kinds. She belonged to the Embroidery Guild of America and attended many national conventions increasing her skills in needlework, white work, cut work and metal work. She entertained students and faculty friends in her summers at her home at Bayberry Point in Biddeford. She loved to cook dishes from all over the world introducing us to new tastes and wonderful stories about her travels. She was an avid gardener, a berry picker and a maker of lemon meringue pies! She was loyal and compassionate, tenacious and gracious.

Many thanks to the nurses and staff at VITAS Health Care, Waterbury, CT, who cared for her with skill and compassion and to Sharon Sorgio, her dear friend and caregiver.

Donations may be made in her memory to an Animal Rescue Shelter or a children’s charity of your choice.
